Week 2 of the 52 NEW Things project takes me to Poway, just north of San Diego, and the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve. According to the City of Poway's website,

"Blue Sky Ecological Reserve is a 700-acre canyon. Fully-trained docents offer hands-on experiences to identify and observe plants and animals, resource preservation activities, and programs. Bring your family, school, or scout group for an invigorating hike or outdoor nature program in this unique habitat."

Ellen and I visited on a Sunday for short hike in Blue Sky Canyon, an easy trek of about 2.5 miles out and back from the parking area. Despite the extreme drought we're having right now here in SoCal, the canyon was a little oasis of green because of the riparian zone there, with beautiful old oak and sycamore trees along the canyon and lots of shade to protect us from the mid-day sun. We had never been here before (a prerequisite of this project), but will definitely be back!
